Kate Steinway Is More Than Just A Famous Name

By: Mary Ann Norbom, Santa Ynez Valley News, 7/19/2017

Kate Steinway knows that her famous name gets her foot in the door. It's her singing, songwriting, guitar and ukulele playing that actually get her into the room and what's drawing a growing number of fans.  A direct descendant of Henry E. Steinway, the founder of Steinway & Sons, Steinway is performing throughout the Central Coast in 2017. From Morro Bay, Paso Robles, and Nipomo to Thousand Oaks, Steinway is leaving her mark and nowhere more than in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Steinway's attraction to the Valley has a romantic origin. Solvang is where she and Kevin Connaghan got engaged in 2013 and married a year later.  The young couple was spending so much time here, Steinway's parents decided to follow them to Solvang in 2016.

She's performing at Sunstone Winery in Santa Ynez on Aug. 13, 20 and 27. In Solvang, The Landsby is her stage on Aug. 12 and Sevtap Winery has her booked for Aug. 26. She's featured at Casa Dumetz in Los Alamos on Aug. 18. She's booking a holiday-themed show for the late fall, including one at Rancho Sisquoc in December.

"I play huge crowds and one person," Steinway said. "In the beginning, playing at wineries was kind of experiment, now I love it. There is such good energy there."

Although she began performing professionally only 18 months ago, Steinway has the benefit of being a professionally trained artist. She was the youngest member of the Los Angeles Children's Choir, and studied under acclaimed opera performer and educator, Suzanna Guzman.

Performing both solo and with a trio, Steinway said there is not a musical genre she doesn't like. She'll be demonstrating that when she releases her first EP (several tracks, but shorter than an album) later this year.

"I'm just going to keep hustling," she said of her young career. "I know 'Steinway' perks up people's ears, but then I have to deliver. I am paying respects to my heritage."
